Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso Livio Felluga 2017

The Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso from the Livio Felluga winery is an intense red with great freshness produced in Rosazzo, in the Colli Orientali area of Friuli Venezia Giulia. This label is made from pure Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso grapes, an indigenous red grape variety with a great tradition; in fact, suffice it to say that it has been present in this region since Roman times. The vineyards, laid out on slight terraces that follow the natural lines of the hills, are trained using the traditional guyot method on soils characterized by marl and sandstone-rich soils of Eocene origin. The winery is a historic family-run business, standard-bearer of the region and today, owner of about 155 hectares managed with great care, passion and respect for the land by the founder Livio's sons.

Livio Felluga Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso is made from grapes harvested manually in small crates, generally around the first decade of October. The clusters are then gently crushed and fermented with maceration on the skins in temperature-controlled stainless steel containers for a period of about 3 weeks, with frequent pumping over. This is followed by pressing and subsequent racking, after which the wine remains in refinement for 12 months in French oak barriques and, after bottling, continues its maturation in the bottle for a further 4 months in thermo-conditioned rooms.

Felluga's Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso shows a brilliant ruby red colour with slight purplish highlights. On the nose appear intense and variegated aromas of ripe fruit, including cherry, plum and fig, notes of Mediterranean herbs, such as marjoram, and dried herbs, followed by spicy hints of anise, coffee, vanilla and roasted cocoa beans, and a hint of underbrush, sandalwood and incense on the finish. In the mouth, it is round, rich, silky and medium-bodied, with a pleasant freshness that makes the sip crisp, increasing its drinkability.
