The Sudtirol Riesling 'Berg' takes the form of a soft and vibrant at the same time interpretation made by the South Tyrolean Niedrist winery. During his oenological studies in Germany, Ignaz Niedrist, owner and winemaker of the estate, developed a deep passion for Rhine Riesling, a passion that later led him to plant rooted cuttings resulting from clonal and massal selection. He chose to dedicate the cooler east-facing slopes surrounded by shady beech trees to this grape variety.
Niedrist Riesling 'Berg' is a 100% Rhine Riesling grown in the hamlet of Appiano Monte within the "Untersteiner" vineyard, located at the foot of the Mendel Massif. The soils here are very deep and limestone, dolomite in nature, located between 500 and 600 meters above sea level. Harvesting is done by hand with scrupulous grape selection, followed by alcoholic fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks for about 3 weeks, with no malolactic fermentation taking place. The following maturation of several months on fine lees also takes place in stainless steel, and the wine is finally bottled with light filtration.
To the eye, the 'Berg' Riesling Sudtirol from the Niedrist winery exhibits a bright straw yellow hue. The olfactory range is defined by complex and pleasant hints of citrus, peach, flowers, tropical fruits and herbs combined with a lovely mineral vein. The exquisite softness and expressive richness on the palate are perfectly balanced by the lashing fresh-sappy component in an elegant, pulpy and enveloping progression of very good length and incisiveness. In addition to beautifully accompanying seafood dishes of some structure, this Riesling can be successfully paired with oriental cuisine.
